Morena reshuffles political leadership across several Mexican states
Political shifts are intensifying across several Mexican states as Morena defines its leadership for upcoming elections. In Puebla, Gabriela “La Bonita” Sánchez Saavedra has resigned from her position as Secretary of Sport and Youth to focus on her professional boxing career and her aspiration to run for the municipal presidency of Puebla in 2027. This move sets up a potential internal competition within Morena against the current mayor, José “Pepe” Chedraui Budib, who has confirmed his intention to seek reelection. The PAN party has criticized Chedraui, suggesting he should resign to focus on his campaign.
In Chihuahua, internal Morena polling has placed Cruz Pérez Cuéllar ahead of Senator Andrea Chávez for the governorship, driven largely by higher name recognition and voter preference. Meanwhile, Morena has issued a formal call for aspirants to serve as federal district coordinators for the 2027 elections. These appointments, referred to as “Coordinators of the Defense of the Transformation,” are seen as strategic moves to organize territorial strength. In Baja California Sur, Manuel Cota Cárdenas has emerged as a key figure in the party's internal processes. Additionally, in Zacatecas, the PRI has begun mobilizing its electoral strategy following the appointment of Adolfo “Fito” Bonilla Gómez as coordinator.
