Gabriele Cavallini wins Giuseppe Berto Literary Prize

Gabriele Cavallini has won the 33rd edition of the Giuseppe Berto Literary Prize for his debut novel, ‘Cuoio’, published by Einaudi. The announcement took place in Capo Vaticano, Ricadi, at the former home and writing site of the late author Giuseppe Berto.

The award ceremony was part of the 11th ‘Estate a Casa Berto’ festival and was hosted by journalist Giancarlo Loquenzi. The jury, chaired by Strega Prize winner Emanuele Trevi, praised the novel for its visceral and intense prose. The jury described the work as a story of ‘odors, viscera, rubble and an obstinate violence,’ noting its ability to explore the depths of the human condition through the history of a family marked by death.

Established in 1988 by Cesare De Michelis, the Giuseppe Berto Prize is one of Italy’s most long-standing and prestigious honors dedicated to debut works of fiction.
