Sofia Barberi killed in Ceriale crash; driver charged, viral video sparks outrage

On the night of 20 June 2026 a 23‑year‑old woman, Sofia Barberi, was riding a scooter with a friend on the Aurelia road near Ceriale when a Fiat 500 collided with her. The car was driven by a 19‑year‑old woman who had held a licence for only three months. Barberi was taken to Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure and died a few hours later; her companion was left with severe injuries.

Carabinieri investigations, aided by city‑wide video‑surveillance, identified the driver, withdrew her licence on‑spot and placed her under investigation for road homicide (omicidio stradale) and serious personal injury (lesioni personali gravissime). Tests showed no alcohol or drugs in her system.

A passenger in the car filmed the aftermath and posted the clip to Instagram, saying, “Ve lo giuro, questa è morta, abbiamo rotto tutto stanotte,” while laughing. The video spread rapidly on social media, prompting widespread condemnation. The uploader later issued an apology, stating, “Chiedo scusa per quello che ho pubblicato… sono un cog…”.

The incident has shocked the local community; municipal officials have postponed events, and psychological support has been offered to the victim’s family. The driver remains free pending trial.
