Gabriella Reyes stars as La Catrina in Metropolitan Opera premiere

Nicaraguan-American soprano Gabriella Reyes performed the role of La Catrina in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of ‘El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego’, a work by Gabriela Lena Frank and Nilo Cruz. The production, which ran from May 14 to June 5, 2026, was conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and staged by Deborah Colker.

Reyes, who grew up in Meriden, Connecticut, as the daughter of Nicaraguan refugees, noted that her cultural roots are essential to her artistry. Her career includes participating in the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and a 2023 performance in ‘Florencia en el Amazonas’, which contributed to a 2025 Grammy nomination for Best Opera Recording.
