Gabrovo landfill fire creates smoke risk for nearby areas
A fire at a regional waste landfill near Gabrovo, Bulgaria, has created a significant risk of smoke affecting several areas. Emergency services have been working to localize and contain the blaze since it was reported shortly after 11:00 AM on September 6.
Due to prevailing west to northwest winds of 5–6 m/s, smoke is being carried east and southeast. This poses a high local risk to the village of Grablevtsi, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the landfill. The Northern Industrial Zone faces a moderate to increased risk, while the Mladost district currently faces a moderate risk.
Weather forecasts indicate a potential shift on September 7, with northern winds of approximately 3 m/s expected to push smoke southward toward the northern residential parts of Gabrovo. Residents in affected areas are advised to limit outdoor activities and keep windows closed if smoke becomes present.
