Malaysia: Bersatu signs CSA with government and contests Melaka seats
Six Bersatu Members of Parliament, including party president Muhyiddin Yassin, have signed a Confidence and Supply Agreement (CSA) with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s MADANI administration. The agreement ensures support for the government and the passage of Budget 2027 through the end of the current term. While some critics, such as Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal, argue the deal muzzles the opposition, analysts suggest it provides the Prime Minister with greater political flexibility and a wider scope for cooperation in Parliament.
In preparation for the Melaka state election, Bersatu has announced it will challenge Pakatan Harapan (PH) in four state constituencies. This includes a strategic pact in the Bemban seat, where PH will allow Bersatu to contest to better attract Malay voters. Analysts note that while this move is driven by electoral considerations, the long-term benefits for PH remain uncertain due to lingering resentment among supporters regarding the 2020 Sheraton Move.
