GAC Group and FAW Group pursue strategic automotive reorganization in China
Major Chinese state-owned automakers GAC Group and FAW Group are pursuing a strategic reorganization to address intense competition in the electric vehicle market and excess production capacity.
GAC Group has signed a letter of intent to acquire a portion of FAW Group’s stake in an automotive joint venture, which reports indicate is FAW Toyota. While this move is expected to make FAW Group the second-largest shareholder of GAC Group with “strategic influence,” the two existing joint ventures—FAW Toyota and GAC Toyota—will not merge into a single entity. Instead, the restructuring focuses on integrating commercial structures, distribution networks, and sales services.
This consolidation comes as traditional manufacturers face pressure from local Chinese brands that dominate the electric and hybrid segments. Toyota is reportedly seeking to unify its sales operations in China to improve efficiency and compete with the faster development cycles of domestic manufacturers.
