GAC seeks to acquire 50% stake in FAW Toyota joint venture

Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) is reportedly negotiating to acquire a 50% stake in the FAW Toyota joint venture, effectively replacing FAW Group as a partner to Toyota Motor Corporation in China.

This strategic move aims to simplify Toyota’s operations in the Chinese market. Currently, Toyota operates through two separate joint ventures: GAC Toyota and FAW Toyota. These entities often produce overlapping models, such as the RAV4 and Wildlander. By consolidating ownership, Toyota intends to better coordinate research and development, supply chains, and marketing efforts.

The restructuring comes amid declining sales for Toyota’s Chinese ventures. Between January and August 2026, GAC Toyota saw a 10% year-on-year decline in deliveries, while FAW Toyota experienced a 26.6% drop. This downturn is attributed to the shrinking market share of gasoline-powered vehicles in China.

For GAC, the acquisition provides direct access to Toyota’s technology, platforms, and distribution networks, potentially strengthening its position in the hybrid and new energy vehicle (NEV) segments. Reports also suggest the deal may follow broader enterprise reforms in China, with FAW potentially becoming a significant shareholder in GAC following the transaction.
