Gadi Eisenkot vows to end Hamas rule in Gaza within 18 months
Gadi Eisenkot, chairman of the Yashar party and a major political opponent to Benjamin Netanyahu, has pledged to end Hamas rule in the Gaza Strip within 18 months of becoming Prime Minister. Making the statement near the Gaza border ahead of the October 27 elections, the former IDF Chief of Staff stated that his administration would either implement a framework similar to Donald Trump's Gaza plan—involving gradual disarmament and a transition to a temporary governing body—or utilize creative military operations to destroy Hamas's military wing.
Eisenkot criticized the current Netanyahu government, arguing that Hamas remains a sovereign power in Gaza three years after the October 7 attacks due to leadership failures. He called for a national strategy and a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 massacre. In response, the Likud party questioned the feasibility of Eisenkot's military objectives given his party's reliance on political partners Mansour Abbas and Ahmad Tibi.
