Gaeco investigates corruption and vote-buying in Várzea Grande

The Special Action Group Against Organized Crime (Gaeco) is investigating Operation Cathedra Venalis, which targets a suspected political scheme in Várzea Grande, Mato Grosso. Investigators are looking into allegations of corruption, vote-buying, and the formation of a criminal organization aimed at weakening Mayor Flávia Moretti to facilitate the rise of City Council President Wanderley Cerqueira.

Testimony suggests a scheme involving monthly payments of R$ 10,000 to council members to ensure political support. The investigation also examines the alleged distribution of commissioned positions and the use of clandestine recordings to pressure lawmakers. Reports indicate that meetings held at a private estate were used to consolidate support for Cerqueira’s leadership and to discuss potential impeachment processes against the mayor.

While the operation has caused political movement in neighboring Cuiabá due to the involvement of certain figures, officials in the Cuiabá City Council have stated that the investigation is specific to the Várzea Grande legislature and does not currently impact their internal leadership elections.
