Gael García Bernal premieres film in Spain honoring Lula da Silva
Mexican actor and director Gael García Bernal premiered his third film, ‘Hombre al agua’, at the 71st Valladolid International Film Festival (Seminci) in Spain. The film is described as a serious comedy that celebrates the community of Latin American countries.
During a press appearance, García Bernal explained that the film pays homage to Brazil’s president-elect, Lula da Silva. He noted that the project was conceived while Lula was still in prison, leading the director to create an ‘anti-telenovela’ regarding Lula’s unionist era. The film includes a black and white segment depicting Lula escaping from prison.
García Bernal also used the film to critique ‘rampant capitalism’ and explore themes of masculinity in crisis, personal insecurities, and the political landscape of Latin America. He emphasized the use of humor as a tool to unmask reality and understand complex or even grave situations.
