Gael García Bernal premieres ‘Hombre al agua’ at Venice Film Festival
Mexican actor and director Gael García Bernal presented his third film, ‘Hombre al agua’, at the Venice Film Festival in the Spotlight non-competitive section. The film features Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin in a starring and producing role.
The plot follows a Cuban lifeguard who saves a wealthy Mexican businessman from drowning. After being offered a job at a factory in Yucatán and marrying the businessman's daughter, the protagonist discovers that his integration into the elite family is part of a larger scheme of manipulation by the powerful classes.
During the presentation, García Bernal discussed the film's themes of social and political manipulation, describing the current era as a ‘reality of popularity’ where everything is co-opted for capitalization. The film aims to reflect Latin American cultural diversity by including characters of Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Brazilian, and Argentine nationalities.
