Gael García Bernal presents ‘Hombre al agua’ at Toronto Film Festival

Gael García Bernal’s new film, ‘Hombre al agua’, is making its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) following a successful debut in Venice. The film is a comedy exploring themes of class, masculinity, and Latin American identity.

The plot follows Camilo, a Cuban long-distance runner played by García Bernal, who saves a powerful Mexican businessman from drowning. This encounter leads Camilo to move to Mexico and marry into a life of wealth, a transition that ultimately challenges his independence and aspirations.

The international cast includes Jorge Salinas, Esmeralda Pimentel, Manuel García-Rulfo, and Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin. Martin serves as an executive producer and plays the role of an actor within the film’s narrative, marking his return to Spanish-language film productions after more than three decades.

Actor Jorge Salinas noted that the casting process for the project lasted one year, expressing his excitement to reunite with García Bernal and Diego Luna.
