Gael García Bernal releases new film Hombre al agua
Gael García Bernal has released his third directorial project, the comedy Hombre al agua, which premieres in Mexican cinemas. The film follows Camilo, a Cuban lifeguard who moves to Yucatán, Mexico, after rescuing a Mexican businessman named Abel. While Camilo builds a new life and a family with Abel’s daughter, Juana, the narrative explores themes of migration, politics, and the commodification of personal identity.
As the story progresses, Abel shifts his focus from business to a political campaign for a governorship, complicating the family dynamic. García Bernal described the film as a tool to use humor to expose how modern life, social status, and even personal experiences are increasingly turned into capital for likes, votes, or economic gain.
The production features Ricky Martin as an executive producer, marking his return to cinema after 30 years. García Bernal noted the difficulty of securing funding for such projects, describing the film as a free and unconventional effort created alongside a Latin American team.
