Gael Monfils officially retires from professional tennis

French tennis star Gael Monfils has officially retired from professional competition at the age of 40. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed that Monfils has been listed as a retired player since October 5, effectively removing him from the sport's mandatory anti-doping program.

The retirement comes earlier than Monfils had previously indicated. He had originally planned to conclude his career following the 2026 season, with a highly anticipated farewell scheduled for the Paris Masters in November. However, his recent withdrawal from the Lyon Open due to “personal reasons” and his updated status with the ITIA suggest his competitive career has ended following his second-round loss at the US Open in September.

Monfils leaves a significant legacy in the sport, known for his charismatic and athletic playing style. During his 22-year career, he reached a career-high ranking of world No. 6, won 13 ATP Tour singles titles, and reached Grand Slam semifinals at both Roland Garros (2008) and the US Open (2016). Following his retirement, Monfils has indicated plans to transition into the financial sector, having signed with a Swiss wealth management company.
