Gaël Monfils announces tennis retirement and career switch to finance

French tennis player Gaël Monfils has announced his retirement from professional tennis following his final Grand Slam appearance at the US Open. The 40-year-old was eliminated in the second round by American Learner Tien in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Following the match, Monfils revealed a significant career transition, stating he has signed a contract to work in the financial sector. He will join the Swiss firm Alphaswiss as a wealth manager starting in 2027. Monfils noted that he has been preparing for this move for several years by completing internships during his playing career.

The decision to retire is also motivated by family considerations. Monfils, who resides in Switzerland with his wife, professional tennis player Elina Svitolina, expressed a desire to reduce his travel schedule to be more present for his daughter as she begins school. While his Grand Slam career has concluded, he plans to play a few more tournaments in Lyon and potentially Vienna before his definitive retirement in October.
