Gael Monfils wins US Open opener on 40th birthday
French tennis player Gael Monfils secured a first-round victory at the US Open on his 40th birthday, defeating Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo with a score of 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0. The win at Louis Armstrong Stadium makes Monfils the oldest player to win a main-draw singles match at Flushing Meadows since Jimmy Connors did so on his 40th birthday in 1992.
Despite losing the opening set, Monfils rallied to dominate the remainder of the match. The victory extends his Grand Slam career as he enters his final season on tour, having previously announced his intention to retire at the end of 2026. Monfils is scheduled to face American Learner Tien in the second round.
