Gael Monfils wins US Open opening match on 40th birthday

French tennis veteran Gael Monfils celebrated his 40th birthday with a first-round victory at the US Open, defeating Paraguay's Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0. The win makes Monfils the oldest man to win a US Open singles match since Jimmy Connors in 1992.

Monfils, who has announced his retirement at the end of the 2026 season, delighted the New York crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium with his signature athleticism and showmanship. After dropping the first set, the former world No. 6 dominated the remainder of the match.

His run at the tournament continues into the second round, where he is scheduled to face 14th-seeded American Learner Tien. Monfils has also been competing in mixed doubles alongside his wife, Elina Svitolina, reaching the semifinals of that event earlier in the tournament.
