Gaelic Players Association seeks €2.8m in government grants

The Gaelic Players Association (GPA) is calling for increased government support for inter-county players to address the financial pressures of elite Gaelic Games. During a meeting with Minister for Sport Patrick O’Donovan, the GPA presented findings from its 2026 Annual Player Survey to advocate for an additional €700 per player in the upcoming budget.

This proposed increase would raise player support payments from €1,800 to €2,500, representing a total requested investment of €2.8 million from the state. The GPA argues that such funding is necessary to cover practical expenses related to training, travel, nutrition, medical care, and recovery, without altering the amateur identity of the GAA.

The association noted that while it spent €4.35 million on player welfare and development recently, total revenue rose only 1% to €7.6 million. The GPA emphasized that government funding serves as vital recognition of the extraordinary commitment required from athletes who must balance high-level competition with employment and education.
