Gaeta City Council approves new foundation amid political dispute

The Gaeta City Council has approved a framework agreement to establish the ‘Fondazione Città di Gaeta – Terra dell’arte, del mito e del mare’, with the Municipality serving as the sole shareholder. Mayor Cristian Leccese defended the move, describing it as a shift toward a ‘managerial spirit’ intended to improve the management of tourism, culture, real estate, and monuments.

The decision has sparked intense political opposition. Emiliano Scinicariello, representing the Democratic Party (PD), criticized the plan, suggesting that transferring these competencies effectively puts the municipality ‘into liquidation.’ The opposition expressed concerns regarding oversight and noted that the municipality would be left primarily with urban planning and waste management responsibilities.
