Gafarou Nignan apologizes to Captain Ibrahim Traoré

Gafarou Nignan, a statistician-demographer and president of the Front Progressiste, has issued a public apology to Burkina Faso's transitional president, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, following a controversial Facebook post.

The incident stemmed from a September 27, 2026, publication in which Nignan claimed that the end of Captain Traoré's leadership was “programmed by Allah for December 2026.” Following the post, Nignan was questioned by the Central Brigade for the Fight Against Cybercrime (BCLCC).

In a video released by the BCLCC, Nignan characterized the post as a “careless” mistake made without malicious intent or a plan to destabilize the state. He acknowledged the gravity of his words, stating, “I recognize having harmed the image of the Head of State. Upon in-depth analysis, it is an attack on state security.” He further noted that his actions could justify being labeled an “apatride” (traitor/stateless person) and requested clemency from the President. Nignan also urged social media users to exercise restraint and responsibility when discussing national institutions online.
