Gagauzia begins electoral period for People's Assembly elections

The electoral period for the election of deputies to the People's Assembly of Gagauzia officially began on August 28. The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has established a calendar for the process, which includes the formation of lower electoral bodies, the establishment of polling stations, the examination of candidate registration documents, and the updating of voter lists.

The actual election campaign is scheduled to begin on October 16, 2026, with the voting and final results expected on November 15, 2026. Recent legislative changes to the Electoral Code aim to facilitate these elections in accordance with Constitutional Court decisions. These reforms include transitioning the People's Assembly of Gagauzia to a proportional representation system, making the November 2026 vote the final one held under the majoritarian system.

New regulations also mandate the creation of a Central Electoral Council for Gagauzia, which will operate under the coordination of the central electoral authority in Chișinău. The new rules introduce stricter measures regarding the use of administrative resources and updated regulations for campaign financing.
