Gagauzia elections to follow national legislation

The elections for the Governor and the People's Assembly of Gagauzia, scheduled for November 15, will be organized exclusively under national electoral legislation for the first time.

Pavel Postica, Vice-President of the Central Electoral Commission, stated that previous procedures were partially regulated by acts adopted by the Gagauzia People's Assembly, which contained rules differing from national standards. The Constitutional Court ruled that the Gagauzia People's Assembly lacks the constitutional competence to adopt such normative acts.

Consequently, the Central Electoral Commission is developing necessary regulations in accordance with the national Electoral Code. These new rules establish procedures for the nomination and registration of both party-backed and independent candidates. A significant change includes the verification of signatures, which will now be conducted electronically through a database rather than requiring physical confirmation at local town halls.
