Gage Wood to miss Double-A Reading championship series
The Philadelphia Phillies have decided to shut down top pitching prospect Gage Wood for the remainder of the season. As a result, Wood will not participate in the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils' pursuit of the Eastern League championship series against Erie.
Reading Fightin Phils manager Al Pedrique stated that the decision was made internally by the organization and was intended to protect Wood. While Wood is reportedly ‘fine,’ the move places him on the development list, removing him from the active roster. The 22-year-old, a first-round pick, has been a significant contributor this year, pitching 95 innings across Single-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading with 139 strikeouts.
The Phillies organization has previously taken a cautious approach to Wood’s workload, monitoring his innings closely following his time at Arkansas. Reading currently holds a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-three championship series and is one win away from its first Eastern League title since 1995.
