Gagosian shuts London and Basel galleries

Gagosian announced the closure of its two recent outposts. In London, the gallery will vacate numbers 28 and 29 of Burlington Arcade, a historic shopping arcade where it has been present since October 2023. The space hosted a small shop and exhibition area, with its final show ending on 18 July featuring works related to Christo and Jeanne‑Claude. In Basel, Gagosian will leave its premises at 1 Rheinsprung, a location it opened in 2019 and used for 17 exhibitions, most recently tied to Art Basel. The gallery says it is reviewing other real‑estate possibilities in the Swiss city. These closures are part of a broader trend among mega‑galleries to reduce their physical footprint, a move accelerated by the COVID‑19 pandemic and aimed at concentrating on markets deemed more dynamic and operationally efficient. Similar downsizing has been reported by other major galleries such as Pace.
