GAIA Africa conducts Zero Waste training for Ghanaian journalists and climate practitioners

GAIA Africa convened Ghanaian journalists for an in‑person workshop on zero‑waste reporting in Accra, preparing them for the second edition of the Africa Zero Waste Academy in Kpone, Eastern Region. Sessions covered climate storytelling with reels, basics of climate science and practical waste‑reduction, reuse and recycling strategies. GAIA Africa’s Zero Waste & Climate Manager Desmond Alugnoa highlighted case studies of composting schemes and informal waste‑picker cooperatives, stressing the potential for green jobs, emission cuts and public‑health benefits.

Separately, GAIA Africa and the Green Africa Youth Organization launched the in‑person phase of the Africa Zero Waste Academy 2026 in Kpong, training over 700 young climate and waste practitioners from across Africa. The programme aims to equip participants with skills to design local zero‑waste systems, create green jobs and protect community health. Ghana’s recent UN designation as a City Towards Zero Waste and the award‑winning Zero Waste Accra Project were cited as exemplars. GAIA Africa associate Ama Asiedu and GAYO coordinator Fathia Selasi Charway‑Glover emphasized the need for a justice‑centered, systemic transformation of waste generation and management.
