Gaia City Council proposes road tunnel for TGV station project

The Gaia City Council has proposed that the project for the new high-speed rail (TGV) station in Santo Ovídio include a road tunnel. The proposed tunnel would connect Estrada Nacional 222 to Avenida da República.

According to a public consultation report, the municipality argues that the current proposal fails to account for increased traffic. Specifically, the council cites the expected rise in metro service frequency on the Amarela line due to the new Rubi line, alongside increased vehicle circulation from the station's planned parking facilities. The council warns these factors will overload the surface intersection at Avenida da República.

The municipality, led by Luís Filipe Menezes, suggests that an underground connection would be compatible with the excavations required for the station construction. They believe this solution would ensure the station acts as an urban center that promotes harmonious development rather than creating traffic bottlenecks.
