Gaia Craft Market vendors face displacement by December
Forty-two merchants and artisans at the Cais de Gaia Craft Market have been ordered to vacate their premises by December. The Gaia City Council intends to replace the existing market with luxury retail spaces aimed at guests from local five-star hotels.
Spokesperson Paulo Ferreira stated that the decision is irreversible. Vendors have been informed they may apply to relocate to the Municipal Craft Fair at Jardim do Morro, but concerns have been raised regarding the process. Many current vendors have operated in the space for over 20 years and lack official artisan certification, which is now a requirement for the new location.
Additionally, there is a shortage of available space; only 40 spots are available at Jardim do Morro for approximately 100 people currently operating in the market and the adjacent fair. A petition against the move has gathered over 500 signatures as workers fear significant unemployment.
