Gaia to vote on 30 km/h speed limit for Avenida da República
The Gaia City Council is set to vote on implementing a 30 km/h speed limit on the northern section of Avenida da República. The affected area stretches from Rocha Leão street, near Jardim do Morro, to Rua de Pádua Correia, near the João de Deus metro station.
This measure follows the removal of a segregated cycle lane on the avenue. The new regulations aim to complement horizontal signaling and address the narrow width of the roads to enhance road safety. The proposal includes the annulment of previous municipal traffic rules regarding segregated cycle lanes in these sections to facilitate the implementation of the two-lane system.
Previously, municipal officials indicated that the changes were intended to improve urban logistics, such as commercial deliveries and patient transport, while combating illegal parking. While there were previous mentions of implementing a dedicated bus lane, the current proposal under vote does not explicitly identify a bus lane for this specific segment.
