GAIAOSE launches redevelopment bids for three Greek railway stations
GAIAOSE, the asset management arm of the Hellenic Growth Fund, announced non‑binding invitations for expressions of interest to redevelop the railway stations of Larissa, Platamonas and Katakolo. The proposals call for mixed‑use projects that would combine hospitality, residential, commercial, cultural and recreational facilities, aiming to upgrade urban areas, improve quality of life and stimulate local business activity.
The Larissa site covers about 233 hectares, including a historic freight‑house building and disused rail tracks, while Platamonas comprises roughly 16 hectares with preserved station structures near Mount Olympus, and Katakolo about 13 hectares adjacent to the cruise‑ship port and the line to Ancient Olympia. Preliminary studies have been completed and the relevant dossiers have been submitted to authorities for a presidential decree on land‑use and building terms. Interested investors may submit proposals by 15 October 2026.
The initiative has sparked debate over possible impacts on historic identities and public spaces, with some observers warning that extensive commercialisation could alter the character of the stations and surrounding communities if safeguards are not put in place.
