Gakken releases advanced mechanical pigeon clock kit in Japan

Gakken Co., Ltd. announced the launch of the "Adult Science Magazine New Pigeon Clock" on 30 July 2026. The kit, described as the most intricate mechanism in the series, features a small bird that flies out of a door, flaps its wings, vibrates its whole body, and produces realistic bird calls using a pump‑driven whistle rather than electronic sounds. A single motor drives over 50 precision‑engineered parts, and the transparent case lets users watch the gears in action. The product is customizable, allowing users to modify the bird’s call and design the clock face and hands.

Editor‑in‑chief Yoshino Toshihiro explained that the aim was to go beyond traditional pigeon clocks by creating a more dynamic automaton. The "Adult Science Magazine" series is published irregularly, about one to two issues per year, targeting adult hobbyists who enjoy hands‑on construction. The new clock is priced at ¥11,780 (tax included) and is intended for readers aged 20‑60 who appreciate detailed mechanical kits.

The release is part of the magazine’s broader strategy to revive the excitement of scientific “furoku” (supplements) for former "Gakushū no Kagaku" readers, offering niche, deep‑dive projects that combine education and craftsmanship.
