Gaël Monfils officially retires from professional tennis
French tennis player Gaël Monfils has officially retired from professional competition, according to the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). Although Monfils had previously intended to play through the end of the season, his status was updated to retired on the ITIA list effective October 5.
Monfils was scheduled to compete in Lyon next week but withdrew citing personal reasons. He had also been expected to hold a farewell appearance at the Paris Masters in November. While Monfils has not made a public announcement regarding his retirement, the ITIA listing suggests a permanent departure from the circuit. Before his retirement, the 40-year-old became the oldest player to win a match at the US Open since 1992.
In related news, Monfils' wife, Elina Svitolina, was defeated in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 in Wuhan by Sonay Kartal. Despite the loss, Svitolina has qualified for the WTA Finals in Indian Wells.
