Galeria files for insolvency, begins search for investors
The Düsseldorf-based department store group Galeria has filed for insolvency for the fourth time in six years, as of October 2. The move places approximately 12,000 employees and 83 department stores in a state of uncertainty.
In response to the financial crisis, the company has launched a search for new investors to stabilize its operations. The group's struggles follow previous challenges including the collapse of former owner Signa, rising energy costs, and shifts in consumer behavior.
This development occurs amidst a broader trend of rising corporate insolvencies in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, there were 24,064 insolvency filings in 2025, a nearly 65 percent increase compared to 2022 levels.
