Galeria faces brand sales bans amid ongoing insolvency

The German department store chain Galeria is facing severe operational challenges following its fourth insolvency filing in six years. Customers in various cities, including Berlin, Cologne, Leipzig, and Trier, have reported finding entire sections of stores cordoned off with red-and-white tape.

These restrictions prevent the sale of specific brands, such as Playmobil and Geox. According to insolvency administrator Frank Kebekus, several manufacturers have exercised their right of segregation to prevent their goods from being absorbed into the insolvency estate, as the products have not yet been fully paid for.

In a development providing some stability, the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) has confirmed that insolvency money will be paid to approximately 9,650 employees. This funding, which is pre-financed by a bank, is intended to secure wages for up to three months, allowing the company to continue operating its 83 branches while searching for investors. Despite this, the future of many locations remains uncertain, with at least 30 sites considered at risk.
