Galeria files for fourth insolvency in six years

The German department store chain Galeria has filed for insolvency at the Düsseldorf District Court, marking its fourth filing in six years. The company operates 83 branches and employs approximately 12,000 people.

There is significant uncertainty regarding whether employees will receive insolvency money. While legal experts initially suggested that ongoing plan monitoring from a 2024 insolvency might disqualify them, a legal distinction may offer hope. The business operations were transferred from Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof GmbH to Galeria S.à r.l. & Co. KG, a legal entity that is not currently under plan monitoring.

Provisional insolvency administrator Frank Kebekus has applied for insolvency money payments, suggesting they be pre-financed by a bank to accelerate distribution to staff. Monthly salary obligations for the workforce are estimated at nearly 25 million euros. The Federal Employment Agency is expected to issue a decision on eligibility shortly.

Amid the crisis, 33 locations have been identified as potential closure sites due to high rents and low profitability. The insolvency is part of a broader trend in the German retail sector, where recent data shows a significant rise in corporate bankruptcies.
