Galeria department store chain files for insolvency

German department store chain Galeria has filed for insolvency at the Düsseldorf District Court, marking its fourth such application within six years. The company stated that the filing is intended to provide a legal framework to stabilize the business and create a foundation for a sustainable future.

While the company plans to continue operations in its 83 remaining branches for the time being, the move creates significant uncertainty for approximately 12,000 employees. It remains unclear whether the staff will receive insolvency benefits or if further store closures will occur.

Retail experts suggest that for Galeria to survive, it may need to transition to a much smaller network of economically viable locations with a clearer product profile. Current ownership includes the US investment firm NRDC and a company belonging to Bernd Beetz, who acquired the chain in the summer of 2024.
