Galeria files for fourth insolvency in six years

The German department store chain Galeria has filed for insolvency at the Düsseldorf District Court, marking its fourth insolvency proceeding in six years. The company cited a significant drop in sales and a financial deficit of approximately 36 million euros as key drivers for the filing. While business operations are intended to continue initially across 83 nationwide branches, the future of the company remains highly uncertain.

The insolvency places approximately 12,000 employees at risk of job losses. There is significant uncertainty regarding whether employees will receive insolvency benefits, as the company is still under plan supervision from a previous proceeding. Frank Kebekus has been appointed as the preliminary insolvency administrator.

Investor Carsten Maschmeyer has criticized the situation, demanding that no further taxpayer money be used to support the chain. He noted that the state previously provided 680 million euros in aid through the Economic Stabilization Fund during the Corona crisis, but estimated that at least 500 million euros of that aid has not been recovered. Local officials, including the Mayor of Cologne, have called for a sustainable long-term concept rather than short-term rescue promises to protect city centers and jobs.
