Galicia accuses Spanish government of delaying wolf conservation data to EU

The regional government of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia) has denounced the Spanish central government for a new delay in sending 2019‑2024 data on wolf conservation to the European Commission. The Xunta says the postponement—over a month and a half after a sectoral environment conference—constitutes an unjustified dilatory tactic that has already triggered an infringement procedure against Spain.

According to the regional authority, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition cites alleged errors in the autonomous communities' data to justify the hold‑up, which hampers the Commission’s ability to assess the status of the wolf and other habitats under the EU Habitats Directive. The European Commission’s Environment Directorate acknowledges the difficulty, noting that Spain’s most recent data date back to 2013‑2018. Environment Minister Ángeles Vázquez says the European Environment Agency is analysing data from other member states to build a continent‑wide picture of the species’ condition.
