Galicia announces educational reforms to improve reading and math
The Xunta de Galicia has announced a series of educational measures to address declining student performance highlighted by the PISA report. President Alfonso Rueda detailed a plan to strengthen reading comprehension and mathematics skills across primary and secondary education.
Key initiatives include implementing a mandatory 'Reading and Comprehension' subject for the first two years of secondary school (ESO) and making reading a transversal element across all subjects in primary education. To bolster mathematical abilities, the 'Avanza Matemáticas' program will be introduced in primary schools to improve reasoning and calculation skills.
The plan also includes increased support for teachers through a dedicated service office and specialized training to address challenges posed by technologies like Artificial Intelligence. Additionally, a pilot project for welcome classrooms in secondary school will assist students arriving mid-course, particularly those requiring linguistic reinforcement.
