Galicia birth rates decline as Ourense hits record lows

Data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) reveals a significant decline in birth rates across Galicia during the first half of 2026. The region recorded 6,355 births, representing a 3.68% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year.

Ourense has been particularly affected, recording its lowest number of births since records began in 2013. The province saw only 608 births in the first six months of 2026, a 5.7% drop from 2025. This figure places Ourense as the province with the lowest birth rate in Galicia and among the lowest in Spain, with 19.8 births per 10,000 inhabitants.

By province, A Coruña recorded the highest number of births in Galicia with 2,799, followed by Pontevedra with 2,150, Lugo with 787, and Ourense with 608. Conversely, deaths in the region decreased by 1.49% during the same period, totaling 19,923.
