Galicia boosts tourism with record quality certifications and over 1,800 new coastal concessions

The Galician government announced a record 429 tourism‑related certifications for 2026, a 12% rise on the previous year, backed by €210,000 in subsidies to renew or obtain UNE quality (Q) and sustainability (S) standards. The initiative will see 48 flags displayed on beaches and sport ports this summer, highlighting the region’s emphasis on continuous improvement and excellence in its tourism offer.

In the same period, the Xunta resolved more than 1,800 coastal concessions, including over 900 seasonal beach kiosks, extending their operation through 31 October and eliminating fees for temporary activities on public maritime‑terrestrial domains. A €1 million programme was launched to beautify the coastline, while the Camiño do Litoral trail was promoted. Environmental groups such as Greenpeace criticised the plan, saying it prioritises tourism over protection of vulnerable coastal ecosystems and offers no measures against erosion or climate impacts.
