Galicia coast features unique natural landmarks and fertile waters

The Galician coast is characterized by unique natural landmarks and exceptional marine fertility. In Ribadeo, the Playa de las Catedrales serves as a major natural monument, featuring stone arches over 30 meters high. Access to this site is highly dependent on tide schedules and requires official permits from the Xunta de Galicia during peak seasons to protect the environment.

Beyond its landscapes, the region's ecological importance is driven by a rare oceanographic phenomenon known as coastal upwelling. One of only four such occurrences globally, the Canary upwelling brings cold, nutrient-rich waters from the deep ocean to the surface. This process, driven by north-northeasterly winds, fuels the marine food chain and supports the significant shellfish production found in the Rías Baixas and Rías Altas.
