Galicia commemorates victims of Francoist repression on August 17‑18

On August 17 and 18, 2026, Galicia held a series of events to mark the "Día da Galiza Mártir" and honour those killed or repressed by the Francoist regime. In the village of Furriolo, a ceremony at the Memorial del Alto del Furriolo paid tribute to Celso Pérez Enríquez, former mayor of Gomesende, and other local victims, including teacher Eduardo Villot. The event was organised by Amigos da República and regional memory committees.

The following day, the nationalist party Bloque Nacionalista Galego (BNG) and its youth wing Galiza Nova gathered in Pontevedra to honour Alexandre Bóveda and all Galicians who fought for national and social rights. The programme featured an exhibition of Castelao’s work, a sculpture of Bóveda, and a series of talks and theatrical interventions, underscoring the call for official recognition of the day.
