Galicia control secured by Nationalist forces in August 1936

Historical records from August 1936 detail the situation in Galicia during the Spanish Civil War. By early August, rebel forces had secured control over the region, including the provincial capitals of A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense, and Pontevedra, as well as major urban centers like Vigo and Santiago de Compostela.

Because Republican resistance in the region had been defeated by late July, Galicia existed almost entirely behind Nationalist lines. This allowed the rebel forces to maintain intact infrastructure, including naval bases in Ferrol and major ports in A Coruña and Vigo, without the immediate need for a large field army to defend against counterattacks. Following the military victory in the region, the focus shifted toward controlling the population and managing the detention of political figures, union organizers, and other individuals associated with the previous political order.
