Galicia could see 5,000 new foreign self-employed workers

The organization UPTA predicts that Galicia could see an increase of more than 5,000 new foreign self-employed workers over the next five years. Current data shows there are 12,713 foreign self-employed individuals in the region, an increase of 2,826 compared to two years ago.

This growth represents a 28.6% increase since August 2024. Foreign workers now account for 6.2% of the total self-employed population in Galicia. UPTA estimates that with an average annual growth rate of 7%, the number could reach approximately 17,800 by 2031.

UPTA highlights the potential for these entrepreneurs to support the rural economy, particularly by taking over small businesses from retiring owners. Foreign self-employed workers are currently active in several sectors, including hospitality (10.6%), construction (7.4%), and commerce (6.5%). The organization is calling for measures to facilitate self-employment for these individuals, especially in rural areas.
