Galicia declares six historical coins Assets of Cultural Interest

The Xunta de Galicia has officially declared six historical coins as Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC). The coins, which are part of the numismatic collection of Antonio Orol, were acquired by the regional government for 178,200 euros through an auction in Madrid.

The collection includes pieces spanning several eras, from the Suebi and Visigothic kingdoms to the reigns of the Catholic Monarchs and Philip II. Specifically, the set consists of two Suebi tremisses, one Visigothic tremissis, a half-excellent from the Catholic Monarchs, and a half-real from the reign of Philip II.

Technical experts noted that these emissions are “rare and unique,” providing essential material and documentary evidence of the Suebi Kingdom's presence in Galicia. The coins are currently held at the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Ourense, where they are available for public viewing and specialist study.
