Galicia demands funding and planning for migrant minor redistribution

Galician authorities are demanding better planning and increased funding from the Spanish central government regarding the potential redistribution of migrant minors following recent events in Ceuta.

Jacobo Rey, the Director General of Family, Childhood, and Demographic Dynamization, stated during a meeting of the Sectoral Commission for Childhood and Adolescence that while Galicia will comply with the law, there is a lack of resources and coordination. Rey criticized the central government for what he described as an “absolute lack of control” over border management, noting that thousands of minors remain unattended in Ceuta weeks after a surge in arrivals.

Furthermore, Rey highlighted a significant financial challenge, noting that the central government recently communicated an 82% reduction in funding for Galicia regarding the care of migrant minors compared to the 2025 budget. He argued that autonomous communities are being tasked with resolving a crisis they did not cause while simultaneously facing major budget cuts.
