Galicia Education Minister proposes plan to monitor teacher medical leave

Galicia’s Minister of Education, Román Rodríguez, has announced a plan to monitor and evaluate medical leave among teaching staff following the registration of 1,393 teacher absences during the first two weeks of the school year (September 1–15).

Rodríguez stated that the objective of the plan is to ensure that those in genuine need maintain their leave while reviewing cases to determine if the conditions for continued medical absence still persist. He noted that the region is seeing an average of approximately 3,000 leave registrations per day.

The proposal comes amid tension with the nationalist union CIG, which has alleged that there are unfilled teaching vacancies in several centers. Rodríguez dismissed these claims as a “hoax” and accused the union of attempting to gain political relevance through inaccurate figures.

In defense of the current administration, the Minister highlighted that the total workforce has increased by more than 900 professionals and asserted that Galicia maintains the lowest student-to-classroom ratios in Spain.
