Galicia extends university financing plan to 2027

The regional government of Galicia (the Xunta) announced on Tuesday that the existing university financing plan, originally set for 2022‑2026, will be extended for an additional year, with a deadline now set for the first quarter of 2027. The extension was justified by the plan’s "good results" and recent changes in the rectorships of the three public universities in the region. The current scheme has mobilised more than €3.3 billion, including €2.542 billion from the Galician government and an extra €85 million over the originally allocated budget.

A new working group has been created to draft the next funding framework for 2028‑2032. Officials stress that the future plan must secure stable, long‑term financing, address inflation and the ageing academic staff, and reinforce incentives for research excellence, knowledge transfer, innovative teaching and international outreach. The Xunta reiterated the aim of reaching a funding level of at least 1 % of regional GDP to keep Galicia’s higher‑education system a strategic driver of economic and social development.
