Galicia faces drought and forest fires amid shifting weather

Galicia is facing a period of significant environmental challenges, including drought, forest fires, and shifting weather patterns. The region has dealt with extreme heat, with Vigo recording a temperature of 39.12 degrees Celsius in July. Recent forest fires in Padrón, Boborás, and Xermadeo O Riós have burned hundreds of hectares, while more recent activity has been reported in Ourense, specifically in Padrenda.

As August concludes, the region expects a transition from stable, warm weather to more unstable conditions. Low-pressure systems from the Atlantic are forecasted to bring rain, showers, and lower temperatures, particularly affecting western areas. The Oficina Técnica da Seca will monitor whether these upcoming rains are sufficient to alleviate the ongoing drought, as 32 municipalities have already been placed under alert for drought or severe water scarcity since July 11.
